How To Apply Your Decal

How to Apply Your Vinyl Decal (Step-by-Step)

Applying your decal is quick and easy once you know the basics. Follow these simple steps for the best result — and don’t forget to watch our rolling technique video if you’re using matte vinyl, which can be a little trickier to peel.

1. Clean the surface

Start by wiping the area where your decal will go.
Make sure it’s completely dry before moving on.
Dust, moisture, or oils can stop the vinyl from sticking properly.

Practical Tip: Sometimes, even the weather can influence a successful application. Applying to really cold surfaces or really warm surfaces can be tricky. Doing a bonnet decal? Let the motor cool down first if you've just been on a road trip.

2. Prepare the decal

Use a squeegee, plastic ruler, or even an old credit card to firmly rub across the front of the decal.
This helps the vinyl stick to the transfer tape instead of the backing paper.

Slowly peel the backing away at about a 45° angle, checking that the decal stays attached to the transfer tape.
If parts lift, press them down and try again slowly.

3. Apply to your surface

Position one side of the decal first while keeping the rest slightly lifted.
Then smooth it down gradually using your tool, working from one side to the other to avoid bubbles.

If you are working on a CURVED surface, applying pressure with your thumb gets good results in the spots where a squeegee can't navigate.

4. Remove the transfer tape

Carefully peel the transfer tape back at a 45° angle.
Your vinyl decal should now be cleanly applied and ready to enjoy.

Some designs hold tighter to the backing of the transfer tape.

Our rolling technique video shows an easy way to guide the vinyl onto the tape smoothly without stretching or tearing — highly recommended for matte finishes.

Take it slow, keep the angle low, and you’ll get a perfect result every time.

This also works well when peeling the tape back off your decal once it's applied.
